"Code Speaks" is the paradigm of open source projects. Coding combined with peer review and sometimes fierce discussions on public mailing lists drive the rapid innovation cycles of many open source projects. It's a system that works very well and has produced millions of lines of excellent software. But as good as the system is it is not infallible as the recent Heartbleed incident has shown.

Today, software defects already account for the majority of vehicle recalls. How can we build better automotive software faster and cheaper with open source? How can we ensure that a software stack meets the requirements without introducing new points of failure? How can we create a common code base as a trusted foundation for product development?

The goal of Automotive Grade Linux is to build a proven reference platform for in-vehicle infotainment. A requirements database with use cases, functional and non-functional requirements, software component and API specifications drives innovation and implementation but also documents existing open source packages utilized. Each component of the software stack is linked to use cases and requirements. Test cases are connected to specifications.

In his keynote, Matt Jones, Senior Technical Specialist at Jaguar Land Rover, will detail how Automotive Grade Linux supports software development for automotive applications through efficient management of common requirements and rapid innovation with open source.
